Thrilling Anxiety
How anxiety makes me feel good.
I’m an anxious wreck.
Every time I have to do some public speaking, I feel my guts tying up into a knot and I could throw them up if I don’t calm down.
I feel my throat tightening up, I’m sweating and I have a metallic taste in my mouth.
That’s about when I will let out a little smile because I kinda absolutely love this. The thrill of the before, the flow state of the during, and the gratification of the after.
Am I un poco loco? (I don’t think so, my mom just says I’m special.) I simply capitalize on my benign masochism.
You can read about this theory here but the premise is this: Watching sad movies, enjoying the soreness of a workout, eating really spicy food or drinking hard alcohol are all because of this.
Borderline unpleasant things feels good.
Give coffee to a kid and they’ll tell you it look, smell and taste like swamp water. And yet, about 9 in10 adults in the world are moody without a cup of it every morning.
Here’s how I make enjoy the unpleasant feelings in business!
Going to Facebook meet ups alone in an unknown place. Investing money in things that may not work out. Quite literally pulling off a few bluffs.
These things makes me anxious like it does to everyone else.
What’s different is I enjoy it as much as it pains me
I feed on that little shiver that runs down your spine when you think “well I’m fucked, how do we make this work”
I’ll smile or crack up laughing by that point.
Most people gets scared and freak out when they are in a pickle but I find it rejuvenating.
The take away is this: Figure out what’s the coffee that’s bitter to others but sweet to you.
They say “Find out what feels like work to other but feels like play to you.”
I’d like to reframe that as what pain do you enjoy that others would not be willing to take.
This is what makes you become exceptional.
(Because we all know people that it’s the people that take their coffee black with no sugar who runs the world)
P.S - The bitterness of coffee is bearable but can someone explain to me why a human would eat Buldak Spicy noodles after tasting it????
